Washington, D.C. - For more than two decades, Kendesi Mohammed has worked at the intersection of culture, community, and creativity. The Guyanese American entertainment consultant, event producer, and media entrepreneur has carved out a space for artists and small businesses across the Washington, D.C. region and far beyond. Mohammed, 43, is the founder of several platforms designed to uplift emerging creatives and entrepreneurs, including Party TV, Talent City, DMV Vendors, and the Guyana Music Hub. Through these and other initiatives, he has become a driving force behind grassroots cultural programming in the District and a vocal advocate for equity in the arts.
Born in Buxton, Guyana, in 1981, Mohammed immigrated to the United States with his family in 1991. Raised in economically challenged neighborhoods, he drew early inspiration from cultural icons like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Tupac Shakur, and Michael Jackson. These influences fueled a belief in the power of self-expression and a determination to build platforms for others to express themselves, too.
“I wasn’t formally trained in media or event planning,” Mohammed says. “I just knew I wanted to create something that gave people hope and a space to be seen.”
What began as local event promotion in the early 2000s evolved into a multi-platform media and cultural enterprise. Party TV, one of Mohammed’s flagship projects, documents nightlife and entertainment culture in D.C., Baltimore, New York City, and Guyana. The spinoff, Party TV Guyana, spotlights Caribbean artists and festivals, bridging diaspora communities with their roots.
Talent City, another of his ventures, hosts open mic nights and showcases under banners like The Crown, Lift Your Spirit, and Follow Your Dreams which provide platforms for poets, musicians, comedians, DJs, and fashion designers. DMV Vendors, meanwhile, gives local entrepreneurs a chance to build visibility and revenue through curated vendor showcases.
In his work, Mohammed blends media production, event coordination, and social entrepreneurship. “It's about more than just a stage or a camera,” he explains. “It’s about community. It’s about giving people a reason to keep going.”
Mohammed’s reach extends across dozens of D.C. area venues, from Peace Lounge and Society Restaurant to now-closed staples like Bohemian Caverns, Ibiza Nightclub, and Fur. He has documented events, captured artists through his lens, and brought together performers and audiences that may not have crossed paths otherwise.

He has documented events, captured artists through his lens, and brought together performers and audiences that may not have crossed paths otherwise.
He’s also no stranger to the grind. Outside of his creative work, Mohammed has supported himself through jobs as a rideshare driver, security guard, and banquet server at hotels in Miami and Washington. These experiences, he says, have only deepened his connection to the communities he serves.
“I’ve met people from all walks of life,” he says. “It’s reminded me that everyone has a story worth telling.”
Mohammed’s efforts are grounded in a personal mantra: Live Your Dreams. The phrase appears across his social media and on stage at his events, serving as both a rallying cry and a mission statement.

A Call to Transform Guyana's Music Industry
In the realm of Guyanese music, I hold immense respect for figures like DJ saffie Hype,
DJ Famous, Quincy Roberts, and Ian Johnson, who wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to this genre. While I haven't personally organized Caribbean events, my focus extends beyond regional boundaries to embrace international music of all genres.
I've played a role in promoting Caribbean events, but my primary mission revolves around collaborating with Guyanese DJs, models, actors, artists, promoters, and event planners to elevate the entire industry. For this to thrive, artists must yearn for success as much as those offering opportunities.
To truly empower the Guyanese music scene, artists need to engage in politics, advocating for robust intellectual property protection laws. A future where politicians prioritize their interests requires a shift from settling for crumbs and dreams to demanding tangible benefits.
Building a billion-dollar industry demands strong leadership. The Guyanese music and entertainment sphere remains stifled by our leaders, who often recognize its significance only during campaigns. Artists must question, "What's in it for us?" when approached by political figures, steering away from gossip and focusing on transformation.
It's time for all stakeholders to unite, set aside selfishness, and collectively contribute to the growth of the industry. Rather than succumbing to rumors and victim mentalities, a focus on wealth creation through proper copyright laws is imperative.
Despite having an economist as the vice president and a doctor as the president, the solution to fostering the industry's growth lies in their willingness to address this simple equation. Let's break the cycle of neglect and usher in a new era for Guyana's industries.

Believe in yourself, no matter how daunting life's challenges may seem. I recall a time when I sought love and financial support from my family, and my Great Uncle encouraged me to take the first step. As I embarked on this journey, my family perceived me as wealthy and selfish. In reality, I was simply venturing into uncharted territory, driven by ambition.
My mother once warned me that I would never achieve wealth relying on her, predicting a bleak fate in the streets. Despite her discouragement, I persevered, determined to realize my dreams. Though there were moments I longed for her guidance and affection, my path diverged from what she envisioned. Enduring hardships, including periods of homelessness, I remained steadfast in my pursuit.
When I finally attained financial stability, I shared my success with loved ones and invested the remainder in my aspirations. Whenever my mother needed assistance, I readily provided it, masking the inner turmoil I faced. For true ambition demands sacrifice and leadership.
Two decades later, my mother acknowledged my courage and self-education. I learned to leverage limited resources for monumental achievements, undergoing a transformative journey of self-discovery. Unlike the parents of tech magnates, my own lacked wealth and formal education. Yet, I found solace in faith and implored for wisdom and resilience.
Despite facing judgment, I maintained my resolve and pressed forward. My story serves as a testament to the power of belief and perseverance. It underscores the significance of parental support, not just in material provision but in nurturing a child's spirit.
In sharing my tale, I hope to inspire others facing similar struggles. May my journey serve as a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative power of determination and self-belief.
Launching Kendesi TV in local bars, nightclubs, lounges, and restaurants was a strategic move to tap into the vibrant nightlife scene and provide exposure to various stakeholders like promoters, DJs, artists, and event-goers. This initiative aimed not only to cover different events but also to highlight and promote the talents and happenings within the local entertainment industry.
Expanding into Guyana further extended the reach of Kendesi TV, allowing it to connect with new audiences and showcase the unique events and talents in the region. This expansion brought in fresh perspectives and content opportunities for the platform.
The evolution into Party TV, with much of its initial content sourced from Kendesi TV, demonstrates a smart leveraging of existing assets and brand recognition. By transitioning and expanding the platform, the company capitalized on the established audience and credibility of Kendesi TV while broadening its scope and offerings with Party TV.
Recognizing the influence and importance of local markets, the focus on benefiting partners underscores a collaborative approach to growth. By empowering promoters, DJs, artists, and event-goers through exposure and promotion, the company not only strengthens its relationships within the industry but also fosters a supportive ecosystem that can fuel further success.
Overall, this strategic progression from Kendesi TV to Party TV reflects a dynamic understanding of market dynamics and a commitment to providing valuable content and opportunities for stakeholders in the local music, fashion, film, nightlight, and entertainment scene.
