BELTSVILLE, Md. In a region as diverse and dynamic as the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, one grassroots initiative is proving that meaningful business growth begins with meaningful human connection.
Founded by Kendesi Mohammed, a Guyanese-born entrepreneur and long-time resident of Prince George’s County, the Kendesi Social Business Club is reshaping what networking looks and feels like. Centered in Beltsville, the club brings together small business owners, professionals, creatives, and innovators from across the DMV not just to talk business but to build community.
“I come from Guyana, where community is everything,” Mohammed said. “That mindset stayed with me. Now I’m creating spaces where people don’t just connect, they collaborate and grow together.”
At a time when traditional networking events can feel transactional or impersonal, the Kendesi Social Business Club offers a more intentional approach. The club organizes weekly and monthly gatherings including mixers, business showcases, collaborative workshops, and pop-up events in Washington, D.C. and beyond.
Each participant is given a chance to speak for two to three minutes, pitching their business, sharing testimonials, or simply telling their story. The environment is warm, inclusive, and authentic, providing an open door for everyone from first-time entrepreneurs to seasoned business leaders.
“It’s not about passing out business cards,” Mohammed said. “It’s about passing along opportunities.”
While its home base remains in Prince George’s County, the club has expanded its reach with pop-up events across the DMV, often partnering with local venues, cultural spaces, and community organizations. The goal is to bridge gaps between industries, neighborhoods, and backgrounds.
From a real estate agent in Lanham to a music producer in Southeast D.C., the club welcomes a cross-section of the region’s talent.
“We’re building a new kind of network,” said Mohammed. “One that cuts across culture, class, and profession. That’s what makes this community so powerful.”
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of remote work, many professionals report feeling digitally drained and socially isolated. For Mohammed, this moment represents an opportunity not just to reconnect, but to reimagine how entrepreneurs support one another.
“People are craving real relationships,” he said. “What we’re offering is a space where you’re not just seen as a business, but as a person.”
The vision for the Kendesi Social Business Club continues to grow. Mohammed is currently exploring partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, and government agencies to provide business training, mentorship, and community development opportunities.
Still, the mission remains simple: create spaces where connection leads to collaboration and where business is about more than profit.
“We’re not just building businesses,” he said. “We’re building bridges.”
